The last main title of the franchise came back in 2019 (Borderlands 3) and now fans have been waiting for its sequel.
Many fans have been waiting for the announcement of the release date for Borderlands 4. Borderlands 4 will be the 5th main instalment of the popular Borderlands series.

Borderlands 4 Release Date
So far, there has been no official announcement regarding the release date, but seeing the success of its predecessors, the release of Borderlands 4 is inevitable.
Moreover, Randy Pitchford (CEO of Gearbox Software) has said that they are working on a “big one”. Now this “big one” seems to us nothing but Borderlands 4.
Also, the previous year, Gearbox announced on Twitter, that they have set up a new studio and are assembling a new development team to work on the Borderlands franchise.
So we can speculate that the studio is working on the next big title and it might not be that far away now.
Borderlands 3 was a huge hit, more than 5 million units were sold within 5 days of its release. Gearbox had sold a total of more than 15 million units of it, with this the total number of units of the Borderlands series exceeded 75 million units.
Borderlands 3 took the net sales of the Borderlands franchise over $1 billion and a movie, with Elli Roth as the director, has also been announced based on the video game which could be released in late 2022.

With all this, we can safely say that the game is under development, and the Borderlands 4 release date could be in Q1/Q2 of 2023.
Borderlands 4 Storyline
Borderlands 4 is most probably going to kick off from where Borderlands 3 ended. Now starting from here are the SPOILERS for the ending of Borderlands 3, so if you have not completed the main campaign, we suggest you first complete it.
Borderlands 3 ended with Lilith, the deuteragonist character of Borderlands 3, successfully saving the planet of Pandora from getting destroyed.
At the end of the game, we see Lilith flying high to Elpis (Pandora’s Moon) to stop it from colliding with Pandora by engulfing the moon in her fire and marking it with her Firehawk mark.
Although we do not see Lilith dying in the process, she just disappears and goes missing. So, this could be the main plot around which the Borderlands 4 storyline might revolve; uncovering Lilith’s mystery.
Lilith’s last words in Borderlands 3 were, “Sanctuary’s yours, Ava. Be Ready.” With Lilith gone, Ava will essentially be the new leader of the Crimson Raiders and we could see her leading the Raiders in the upcoming game.
Ava is another character around whom the next story might revolve. We might be seeing a time leap in the new title, maybe Ava would have been trained better and grown to become a more mature and a new skilled leader of the Crimson Raiders.
The main storyline of the Borderlands game is related to saving the vaults containing alien tech and power from falling into the wrong hands.
Surely, Pandora was not the last vault, there are many other vaults storing great powers and treasures which need to be protected.
So, we could see the team of raiders on their quest to save some more vaults from the bad people.
The omission of the remaining vault hunters like Athena, Fiona, Loader Bot, Gaige, Salvador, Axton, and others from Borderlands 3 also opened ways for Gearbox to feature them in Borderlands 4.
What will be the Borderlands 4 storyline? Well, it will only become more apparent when the official Borderlands 4 trailer is released, till then we can just theorize and speculate.
Borderlands 3 left us with many questions and many players scratching their heads. Gearbox has endless narratives that it can use to continue the Borderline franchise.
